Creating The Perfect Staycation For Your Family

If your family has a tight budget and cannot afford to travel anywhere for vacation, why not consider having a “staycation”? Planning a week of activities for the whole family can be fun in itself, with every member offering ideas or suggestions. There are many options available for very little cost, or sometimes even no cost.

Camp in the Backyard
Camping in the backyard can be almost as much fun as going to a campground. Have the children help set up a tent and build a fire pit.Additional information can be found at http://www.backyardgardeningtips.com/gardening/the-backyard-fire-pit-is-great-for-entertaining/. If a fire pit isn’t possible, then drag out the grill, because cooking outdoors is half the fun of being in the great outdoors. If you don’t own a grill, you can buy an inexpensive “throwaway” type for a few dollars, and then all that is necessary is a big bag of charcoal. Don’t forget some sticks for the hot dogs or marshmallows!

Go on Nature Hikes
Plan a day to go on a hike–whether it be in your neighborhood, or at a local park. You don’t have to have mountains or forests for enjoying a great hike, just take advantage of what your area provides. Point out the different kinds of trees as you go, and have the kids each collect a leaf from each one, and later make a scrapbook of them. Each family member can carry a backpack with some food in it, too, then you can just stop somewhere and have a picnic, adding more fun to the day!

Go Fishing
If you have a body of water near you, consider taking a fishing trip. Children love fishing, even if they don’t catch a thing. Have a picnic, too, and go swimming, if it’s allowed–make a day out of it!

Your “staycation” can be as fun as the “real” kind, if you let it!
